Can insects like fly hear?

There are a few insects that can hear; but most of the insects, including flies, can not hear at all. Every imaginable kind of sound has been tried, and insects, with the exception of a very few kind, take no notice of the sound whatsoever. The highest string of violin has been scraped an inch away from bees engaged in pillaging flowers, and the bees paid no attention.
Other senses of insects like flies are so wonderful, and in some respects so superior to our own, that it is immensely interesting to find that nearly all, including the highest insects such as bees, ants and wasps, are deaf.
