Yes, only female mosquitoes know to give a syringe-like bite. The reason is that they need blood for reproduction by laying eggs. Mosquitoes have about 3,000 types. According to species their female mosquitoes feed on particular kinds of birds and animals. Some mosquitoes feed on warm-blooded animals like cows, horses and humans, whereas some female mosquitoes depend on birds for their “food”. There are some types of mosquitoes who only feed on cold-blooded reptiles like snakes and chameleons.
Male mosquitoes’ food is not blood, they feed on nectar. And that too they don’t need for long, since a male mosquito only lives for about 7 to 10 days. Life of female mosquito is about 30 to 35 days.
