Why do Americans celebrate Columbus Day despite Columbus never setting foot in their country?

Columbus is often credited with establishing European contact with the Americas as a whole, even though he didn’t discover the region or set foot in what is now the USA.

Columbus Day was largely pushed on Americans by Catholics (and some protestants) who recognize Columbus as a key figure in the worldwide spread of Christianity.  He is also celebrated by Italian-Americans of which there are many.

Generally, Americans “celebrating Columbus Day” just means they take the day off.  People don’t really celebrate Columbus outside of specific communities which are largely Catholic and/or Italian.  Some states don’t even officially recognize Columbus day.

Why is pizza the most popular delivery food?

Pretty much every ingredient in pizza is low cost and shelf stable.

Pizza can be customized many different ways but still made quickly.

The nature of pizza cooking is fast but holds for a significant period.

This all makes delivery possible with low overhead and lots of options with a product that is still fresh when delivered.

Burgers require perishables, take too long to cook and aren’t peak after 10 minutes of sitting.

What is the correct use of semicolon?

Semi-colons are used to link two related clauses into a single sentence.

“I wanted to go to Wendy’s; she wanted Pizza Hut.”

Both of these can exist as separate sentences and it would be grammatically correct to write them as such. But you can link them using a semi-colon so that when they’re read outloud, there’s less of a pause like there would be if there’s two sentences.

Alternatively, they can be used in place of commas when writing a sentence containing a list that might get confusing if you just relied on commas to separate the list items:

“My role models are George Washington, the first president of the United States; Nikolai Tesla, a famous inventor; and my Uncle Stu, who beat cancer.”

If I had just used commas to separate the list items and the sub clauses, it could be read as though George Washington and “the first president of the United States” were separate items in the list.

Do governments have bank accounts? If not, where do our taxes go when paid?

Most governments have a national bank. For example Bank of England or the Federal Reserve. And the different parts of the governments have bank accounts so they can interact with the rest of the banks and keep track of their spending and income.
However, there can be a lot of things happening behind the scenes depending on the country. Normally the government is the one who prints money so when you pay taxes they can just burn the money you just paid and when they pay a bill they can just print the money they need. So a government bank account may not even have a balance. Income and expenses is being tracked like normal with budgets and ledgers but the actual money does not have to be tracked.
But printing money when you need it is not the best option as it causes inflation which can cause economic collapse. So the central bank will issue bonds to loan the money it needs. And when it gets income it will be used to pay back the bonds.
The exact details of how a government handles its money is up to them but as you can see they have a few more options then a normal business. They do not even have to follow the banking laws as the laws that decide how the government should handle its money can override the banking laws.

How did the word “gross” end up with so many different meanings?

It all comes from the original meaning that was something like “big.”

But that sense of big was flexible.  So, in some usages it went from meaning big to meaning too big. That sense of too big came to refer also to the elements that made something up and to the thing itself. So a very fat person might be called a “gross” person, or a very coarse fabric might be “gross.” This became equated with being generally distasteful, vulgar, or disgusting.

In another direction it retained its sense of largeness without the negative connotation. That morphed into gross (as opposed to net) being the largest measurement of the object with nothing taken away. It also appears to have been used by the french as a term to denote a “big” dozen, which came to be the term for 12 dozen.

Why do most societies have two-name system?

Family is a big part of almost every culture, because of our instinct to have kids and support them and ensure that our genes get passed down. We have a natural desire to make sure our kids do well, so they can have kids and pass down their genes, thus ensuring the survival of the species.

If you have a bunch of families living together, you need family names to distinguish different families from each other, and you need first names to distinguish different individuals within that family.

Systems with two, three, and four names are all common. One name is also not too rare (notably in Indonesia). Most USA citizens have three names. Many Mexican and Spanish citizens have four names.

Why are video game final enemies always called ‘the boss’?

Video game bad guys generally are all part of the same organization. So when you reach the final bad guy he is usually the one who has been organizing all the other bad guys. So that would make him their boss.
So in games where you are fighting an organization or maybe an army, the final boss is literally “the boss” of all your enemies. That particular plot is pretty common so it just became common to call the bigger bad guys “bosses”.
Early arcade games, particularly Contra, Double Dragon and Kung Fu literally called them “the boss” in the game and in the instruction manual. After that it stuck.

Where did the social expectation of only girls wearing dresses come from?

About three thousand years ago, men who were going into the field to work, or going to battle would “gird up their loins” by taking the hems of their robes, and tying them up around their legs like pants.
This continued for quite a while, then the styles started to change. Robes became dresses over time, and pants became the norm for those that went out to work and fight. Being that peasant women stayed on the homestead for a majority of their lifetimes, there was no need for pants.
Also, in the past pants were more expensive than dresses, because sewing wise, dresses are extremely simple (not modern ones), while pants are more complex. So you used pants only if needed and usually they were useful for the manly works, while all the women stuff was easily doable also with dresses, so there wasn’t need for expensive, more complex and so more prone to breaking pants.
From that, it stemmed the conception that dresses aren’t manly, so the style evolved with that.

What is the history of loafer shoes? What are the different types?

Otherwise known as slippers or slip-ons, loafers are typically low, lace-less shoes, in the model of moccasins. Though born in Europe, they are more popular in the American continent, especially in North. They are worn by both men and women.

Loafers have relatively a short history but they had a great influence on the fashion trends. There are disputes regarding their origin. Their origin is said to have been in Norway. Norwegian fishermen used to wear the shoes designed in the style of moccasins, though the style was not much popular outside.

One of the earliest designs of loafer to hit the market was the Wildsmith Loafer made by Raymond Lewis Wildsmith of Wildsmith Shoes in England. It was designed as a casual wear for King George VI. Later various models of the shoe were developed by other firms as well.

The modern era of loafers began when Norwegian shoemaker Nils Gregoriusson Tveranger started his business around 1908. In 1930, Tveranger introduced a new design called the Aurland moccasin, named after his birthplace. He later renamed the slip-on Aurland Shoe. This design was inspired from the traditional shoes worn by locals in Aurland. The Norwegians began exporting them to the other parts of Europe, and struck a chord especially with the American tourists.

Soon, the American magazine Esquire ran a feature on loafers, including some photographs of Norwegian farmers in a cattle loafing area. It is believed to be the inspiration behind the name loafers. Later, the Spaulding family in New Hampshire marketed shoes derived from this design, naming them loafers. Another turning point came in 1934, when the bootmaker G.H. Bass started making loafers under the name Weejuns, a corruption of the word Norwegians. His design included a leather strip across the saddle. Numerous designs began to come out, and behemoths like Gucci entered the field. Now loafers are among the most favorite casual footwear.

There are many kinds of loafers, though four types are most prominent ones. The Penny loafer is of course the most classic and popular of them. It has a leather strap across the top of the shoe, designed with a diamond-shaped slot. Then there us the Tassel loafer, which had its origin in 1950s. The Snaffle loafer was born in 1968, introduced by Gucci. Their notable feature is the brass strap in the shape of a horse’s snaffle bit laid across the top of the shoe. The other one is the Apron loafer, which has stitches on them.
